Alchemy of Sound
Welcome to the Sound Practitioner Training
You're booked in. Everything you need before we meet is on this page.
welcome
We're really excited you're joining us on this journey of sound.
Over four days you'll learn what the instruments are and how they're played, what happens in a body when sound moves through it & how to hold a space while it does. You'll leave with a ninety-page manual, your certification and a practice of your own to continue with.
Everything is provided and no previous experience is needed. Most of our students arrive having never held a bowl and a good number arrive unsure whether they're musical at all. Both are completely fine starting points and neither will hold you back.
This page has three things on it: your preparation booklet, a short form to fill in before we meet & the practical details for the four days.
before we meet
There are two things to do before the training.
The first is to fill in the questionnaire below. It tells us what we need to know in order to prepare the room and look after you well. Please send it as soon as possible.
The second is to start preparing. Download your preparation booklet and work through it in whatever way suits you some reflective writing, a short daily listening practice & a few things worth doing in the weeks beforehand. Nothing in it is collected or assessed. It's yours entirely, and it's there to help you arrive a little more attuned.
the preparation booklet
A Handbook covering what to reflect on, what to practise & what to bring.
This isn't homework and it isn't preparation in the sense of catching up. Everything you need to know is taught in the training itself.
What the booklet does is help you arrive a little more attuned. It holds some reflective writing on your own relationship with sound, a short daily practice built around listening, guidance on setting up a place to practise at home, and the practical details for the days themselves.
Take what's useful and leave the rest.
the questionnaire
Short answers are fine. These help us prepare properly. Everything you write here is read only by Natalija and Jonny & stays with us.
what to bring
-
Comfortable Clothing
Your journal and a pen
A refillable water bottle
Warm layers and socks
Your own instruments, if you have them and want to
-
Strong perfume or scented products — we share a close space and some people are sensitive
Loose jewellery and flowing skirts, shirts or wide trousers for the days we're playing: both catch on instruments more easily than you'd expect
caring for the instrumentsworking with the instruments
Many of our instruments have been with us a long time, and some are more fragile than they look. Learning to handle them with care is part of the practice rather than something separate from it & it's a habit worth carrying into your own work.
❋ CLEAN HANDSPlease wash your hands before working with the instruments and again after breaks. Oils from skin leave marks and crystal bowls show every touch.
❋ ask before you move anythingPlease don't pick up, move or play an instrument without checking with us first. Some are placed deliberately and some need a particular way of being lifted. We're always glad to hand you something and show you how it's held.
❋ CLOTHING AND JEWELLERYRings, bracelets, long necklaces, flowing fabric — all of these catch on rims and edges. Short nails also make playing considerably easier.
❋ NEVER STEP OVER AN INSTRUMENTPlease walk around, never over anything laid out on the floor, even when it means taking the longer way. This is partly practical: instruments get knocked and people trip and partly about how we hold them. In many traditions, stepping over an instrument is understood as a lack of respect toward it.
how we are with each other
Four days in a group means the atmosphere is something we create together. A few things we hold to & invite you into.
Listening to one another. When someone shares a question, a hesitation, something that came up in a practice, receiving it fully is part of the work. A great deal of what people take home comes from what others bring into the room.
Confidentiality. What's said in the room stays in the room. That's what makes it possible to speak openly.
No comparison, in either direction. People arrive from many different starting points, with instruments and without, with musical background and without. All of it is welcome and none of it is a measure of anything. This is a beginning for everyone in the room.
Space for everyone. Take the room you need and leave room for others.

instruments & the shop
For the curious beginner, the experienced practitioner & everyone in between. With this collection, we invite you to deepen your relationship with sound.
Our collection.
You don't need anything for the training, everything is provided.
We built the shop around instruments we play and use ourselves. What we wanted was to be able to point our students toward instruments we trust and can stand behind. Finding the right producers for the collection took a long time and a lot of searching and everything in the shop is there because it earned its place.
If you're thinking about buying, it's usually easier after the four days. Playing a wide range of instruments gives you a much clearer sense of what suits you than any amount of research beforehand & we're always glad to talk it through with you.
When you're ready, you have 10% off the whole instrument collection as a student. Each Himalayan bowl is chosen by hand and each crystal bowl is made from scratch, once your order comes in so allow three to four weeks from order to arrival.
what comes after
Level 1 gives you everything you need to begin working with sound and offering sessions.
When you're ready to go further our 50 Hour Level 2 In Depth (20 Hr in Person Training + 30 Hr Guided Sadhana) takes up voice, more depth in instruments & playing and the professional side of building a business. It is a continuation for people already working with sound or for those that wish to dive deeper into it.
